LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KATV) — When you shop or eat a “K Hall and Sons Produce” in Little Rock, you can’t help but notice the long lines. However, the Hall family’s story of how they got started and what keeps them going is Arkansas’s Black history.
K Hall and Sons is located at 1900 Wright Avenue and is family-owned and operated. It’s the dream of Estella and Knoxie Hall – 50 years ago, still standing and thriving today.
“Of course, he got older and passed away. He always had visions. He told me about stuff he wanted to happen while I was just a kid. Being young, I didn’t know any difference. But I feel they would be proud of how we’re continuing their legacy,” said Devin Hall.
You can get anything from K Hall produce, cooked crab legs, and Big Back Association T-shirts and Hats. It’s one of Little Rock’s long-standing black-owned businesses. “It started as a service station my grandfather would rent and sell produce from the farm. Eventually moved inside and owned the building. Twenty years later, we started selling food,” Hall continued.
“We do what we can for the community. We look after our people. We look out for everyone, but we look after our people—especially those who can’t do it for themselves. We will help them and build the community up,” said Hall.
They grew up working, cleaning, and stocking the shelves. Now, they’re helping their parents call the shots.
“It’s been a blessing just to sit here and experience it. Being the youngest and seeing how it grew from being a kid to where it is now, just that quickly in my lifetime, has been a blessing. I’m grateful to be in a situation where I can continue the legacy,” said manager Devin Hall Jr.
“It’s instilled in us since we were little kids when we had to get up and go to the river market and then come up here and work. Then do seafood. It’s something that’s grown on us and in us,” said manager David Hall.
The Hall brothers tell Channel 7 that the store’s next 50 years will be even bigger and better.
