STRATFORD PERTH MUSEUM
*************************
The Stratford Perth Museum is proud to present Uncovering Identities: An Exploration of Researching Black History, featuring award-winning local artist, filmmaker and historian HAUI. This engaging event will take place on March 8, 2025, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Stratford Perth Museum Indoor Theatre.
As part of the ongoing Truth, Love & Community Seminar Series, this special program invites attendees to explore the rich but often overlooked Black heritage of Perth County and beyond. HAUI—a celebrated multidisciplinary artist and the first Black director at the Canadian Opera Company—will delve into his investigative journey of uncovering the forgotten stories of Black communities in Canada.
Event Highlights:
- The inspiring history of the Harrison family, early Black business owners in Stratford.
- The trailblazing story of Charles H. “Charley” Lightfoot, one of Canada’s first Black hockey players.
- HAUI’s artistic work, illuminating narratives of Black resistance, identity, and erasure.
- A Q&A session with HAUI.
- Light refreshments and opportunities for discussion.
“My artistic practice has long been rooted in uncovering Black stories relegated to the peripheries of history,” says HAUI. “From the defiance of Marie-Joseph Angélique in Montreal to the global impact of Portia White, my work aims to challenge erasure and celebrate resilience.”
HAUI’s career spans theatre, film, opera, and visual arts, with acclaimed projects such as MixedUp (OUTtv), Private Flowers (Toronto History Museums), and Aportia Chryptych: A Black Opera for Portia White. His work continues to shape the national conversation on Black history and representation in Canada.
