ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – There are all kinds of options in Georgia to shop at this holiday season and one Tucker gift shop is encouraging people to keep small, minority-owned businesses in mind.
“We say that we spread southern hospitality one gift at a time,” said Karen Gayle, owner of Georgia Gifts and More.
At Georgia Gifts and More, you can pick up a little bit of everything — candles, snacks, sauces, candies, t-shirts.
It is a hub of all things local.
“Everything that represents the state, made here in the state. That is what we sell,” said Gayle.
Run by Karen Gayle and her husband, they started the shop right before the pandemic.
“I am a Georgia peach,” said Gayle, laughing. “Tucker and this whole North Dekalb area has really been a great place to be.”
The holiday season is in full swing and the shop is encouraging the community to keep small, minority-owned businesses in mind.
“It is not just supporting us. It is supporting our vision, our dream,” said Gayle.
Decide DeKalb, the economic development authority of DeKalb County, has released resources like the “DeKalb Black Business Guide” to encourage people to support small, minority-owned businesses.
“They are pillars of the community,” said Terra Washington with Decide Dekalb. “We know that statistically, minority-owned, Black-owned businesses don’t get the same types of opportunities from banking institutions, financial institutions. So with that in mind, we want to do everything that we can to support that effort.”
On Saturday, Decide DeKalb will host an event they are calling the Santa Squad. Everyone is asked to meet at the Avondale MARTA station at 9 a.m. From there, the group will travel to six local small businesses to shop. Tickets are $25.
