COEUR d’ALENE — Recently, Taylor Black, a leader inside Microsoft and expert regarding AI and innovation, came to speak with the build_CDA community about how AI is changing everything including jobs, creativity and our daily lives.
AI: A powerful tool or a risky shortcut?
Black, who helps coordinate work with thousands of AI experts at Microsoft, attended an AI conference at the Vatican. He explained that AI is an incredible tool, but only if we use it wisely.
“AI is like a really smart prediction machine,” Black said. “It can do things fast, but it’s only as smart as the data humans give it.”
He warned that AI could make people too dependent on machines. He shared a personal example: “I got a dog so I’d go outside and take walks. But what if I put her on a treadmill instead? That would take away the whole reason I got her!”
His point? If we let AI do everything for us, we might lose what makes us truly human — our ability to think, create and connect with others.
AI and opportunity: The Best time to create
Even with those risks, Black is excited about AI’s ability to help people start businesses and create new ideas. “There has never been a better time to be an entrepreneur,” he said. “AI can handle boring tasks, so people can focus on big ideas and creativity.”
He encouraged students and young professionals to improve their communication skills and learn how AI works. “I don’t think learning to code is as important as it used to be,” Black said. “Instead, understand how AI systems work and how to use them in smart ways.”
Who wins in an AI world?
Black pointed out a challenge: People who know how to use AI will have an advantage, while others could fall behind. AI is already replacing some jobs, like call-center work and entry-level coding.
“There will be a gap between those who use AI and those who don’t,” he said. “The key is to be on the side that understands it.”

Black also talked about how businesses are changing. Some startups are growing incredibly fast, using AI to handle work that used to take years. He mentioned a company that made $28 million in under a year by using AI to create profile pictures.
“This isn’t about getting rid of jobs,” Black explained. “It’s about rethinking work. AI can handle the boring stuff so we can focus on the things that matter.”
The importance of community
Black’s talk fit perfectly with build_CDA’s mission of being a community of friends who help each other build the future. “We can’t let AI make us passive,” he said. “We need strong communities to balance out an automated world.”
At build_CDA, people can learn about AI, how to start a company, marketing, sales and tech in a safe, welcoming place. There’s no need to be afraid — this is where you can experiment, ask questions, and grow alongside others regardless of how much you do or do not know.
The local group has even caught national attention. Some build_CDA members have been invited to Washington, D.C. for private meetings about the future of innovation and entrepreneurship in America.
What’s next for build_CDA?
More exciting events are coming. On May 1, the founding CEO of Beats by Dre will visit Coeur d’Alene to mentor local entrepreneurs, hear startup pitches, and meet with venture capital investors. It’s another example of how build_CDA is bringing big opportunities to its members as they do big things.
