Locally, there has been a huge increase in entrepreneurship and the number of small businesses in recent years.
In honor of Black History Month, the following list includes Black-owned businesses located in the city or serving the area in some capacity. If no address is provided the business is home-based.
Romona Thompson, owner of D’Unique Creationz, said her desire to leave a legacy for her children is what inspired her to start her own business.
“I knew I could take my creativity to the next level,” Thompson said. “I also wanted to be an active and supportive part of my community and show others that they can do whatever it is they want to do.”
Thompson said she feels that Black-owned businesses do not get the support needed from each other or the community in general.
“Until we learn how to do that we will always be the minority,” Thompson said. “There is enough to go around. Everybody is doing something different and I wish we could all learn how to network together and help each other to do and be better.”
Thompson creates apparel, tumblers and cups, glass etching, sublimation and vinyl goods, stickers and other creative projects.
