SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — As we celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and look ahead to Black History Month in February, we are highlighting and honoring Black history right here in KELOLAND.

United Soul Affinity Space

Augustana University in Sioux Falls is honoring a group from the past who advocated for more representation of African American and Indigenous cultures on campus. The United Soul Affinity Space opened in October of 2024 in Solberg Hall.

SDAAH Museum

The South Dakota African American History Museum is located on the main floor of the Washington Pavilion in downtown Sioux Falls.

Over the years it has highlighted key figures in the state’s history, from the Buffalo Soldiers to the first African-American filmmaker, Oscar Micheaux.

Right now the space features artwork focusing on Black history and reflecting the Washington Pavilion’s 25th Anniversary theme of Space Exploration.

President and Curator, Zechariah Van Harris III took over leadership last summer. You can contact Van Harris via email: zechariah@sdaahmuseum.org. You can also learn more about the SDAAH Museum on its website.

South Dakota NAACP

After some uncertainty toward the end of 2024, the South Dakota NAACP got the support it needed to retain its charter heading into 2025. Ashley Knoff with the NAACP Sioux Falls Branch talks about the membership drive, how people can get involved, and the importance of having a local chapter.

South Dakota Black Chamber of Commerce

This month, the South Dakota Black Chamber of Commerce will celebrate its first anniversary of helping minority-owned businesses succeed. Chamber President, Lenn Patterson George and VP of Finance & Economic Development, Immanuel Bassey join us in the studio to discuss what they hope to accomplish in year two.

Flagman Doug Clark

Last year, South Dakota sports hall of famer, Doug Clark, made his honorary debut in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Iowa Speedway. KELOLAND’s Anya Joseph caught up with Clark to reflect on his impressive career as a flagman.
