ROCKFORD (WREX) — February 29 marks the last day of Black History Month, but one Rockford community center filled the last day of the month with education.
Dozens of people came together at the Washington Park Community Center in Rockford to attend the Black History Expo. The expo focused on how everyday people can make a difference and how historical black leaders paved their way to success.
Leaders in the community spoke on various topics that affect Rockford from housing to mental health, while encouraging the audience to get involved and make change.
People who attended were also able to learn about black-owned businesses and organizations in the area and mingle with law enforcement, officials and lawmakers.
Organizers of the Black History Expo say they hope people will become more united after attending the event.
“It’s important to bring these people in because it ultimately lifts up the look of the community, builds the pride so that you have that mental stability,” says Ashley Williams, Black History Expo organizer. “Anytime someone is proud of themselves, not only do they stand taller, but the lift up one another.”
This was the first time organizers hosted this event.
