GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – One local Black business owner has a high demand business, and he has advice for aspiring young Black entrepreneurs.
Shervin Bunch started his business, Chicken N The Bag, a little over a year ago. It took about five years to prepare before business could start operating. Even in a city that is not very diverse, it wasn’t hard getting started.
Said Bunch, “Believe it or not, it wasn’t hard getting started here in Grand Junction. Like people were saying, the community came out and supported us and helped us. And a lot of my neighbors helped support it with the trailer. Just gave us an open hand to get the trailer started.”
He opened the business in Grand Junction because he wanted to provide the city soul food. The demand from the community after opening forced him to be open even more.
Said Bunch, “The community came out and they kept eating and eating and eating. And we went from five days to seven days. And now we at seven days still.”
Bunch’s advice to those in the Black community who want to start their own business is to give to the community.
Said Bunch, “If you are giving and helping with an open heart, the community loves that. That’s what they love the most because they’ll support you more when you are giving more than taking in.”
Bunch leads by example in this way.
“We give away so much free food to the homeless when they need food and so on and so forth. We just give back to the community.”
And it may take some time and extra work to reach your goals, but they are never put out of reach.
Said Bunch, “To be a black owner, you have to sometimes work more than just one job to get to where you need to be. You have to work in the morning time at a job and then feel free to work at nighttime till you get to where you need to get to because it’s not going to be easy. Even though you’re doing things for the community, you still have to do your part to make sure your businesses are successful.”
Bunch hopes to expand his business to Montrose and Delta in the future. If you are wanting to try some of the food, the truck is located on 457 Colorado Ave.
