Sheffield made history as Detroit’s youngest council member when elected in 2013.
Current Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield is running for mayor.
Sheffield, who became the youngest ever board member when he was elected in 2013, announced his candidacy Dec. 10 at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) local union.
He spoke about his vision for a “more united” Detroit, highlighting his history as a lifelong resident of the city and the progressive initiatives he has supported on the council.
“I stand before you today filled with hope, pride and unwavering faith in our city and in each of you,” Sheffield said, according to a press release obtained by K. BLACK ENTERPRISE. “This campaign is not about me. it is about our collective future. this campaign aims to ensure that we build on the growth and progress we have created together and ensure that our city’s prosperity touches the lives of every resident. Together we can and together we will.”
His first campaign event was also attended by notable figures such as Judge Greg Mathis, former judge of Michigan’s 26th Circuit Court, and Tommy Walker, founder of Detroit vs. All.
“Indeed, the work he has done has benefited all of us. Indeed, when we needed him in our battles, he was there. When we needed him to invest in our neighborhoods, he was there.” according to Mathis Detroit Free Press.
Sheffield hopes to expand her inclusive housing policies while uplifting Detroit families.Sheffield, who comes from a family known for her advocacy of civil rights and social justice, also wants to promote economic mobility for all inspire youth with empowerment and mentorship programs.
“What we’ve experienced in Detroit, this resurgence, has been about partnership. It’s about the collective effort of our federal, state partners, to really help move Detroit forward,” he said importance and look forward to working with all levels of government and on both sides of the aisle to find common ground that will promote the growth of our city.”
Current Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan recently announced his campaign for governor of Michigan.He is running as an independent.
