The tapes were found in an abandoned warehouse reportedly owned by singer and producer Brian Loren.
Former California Highway Patrol officer and now stay-at-home dad, Greg Musgrove, has made an impressive new find from his hobby of “treasure hunting.” The 56-year-old recently unearthed a number of cassettes and DAT tapes containing unreleased Michael Jackson recordings in the San Fernando Valley. traces.
Musgrove found the tapes in an abandoned warehouse he bought that had once belonged to music producer and singer Brian Loren.
There were about 12 unreleased tracks from the time Jackson was working up to his Dangerous album, around 1989-1991.
Musgrove told The Hollywood Reporter“I went to all the fan sites. Some (songs) are rumored to exist and some have been leaked a little bit. The couple isn’t even out there.”
The full inventory of Musgrove’s finds is impressive, with full tracks and even snippets of other unreleased songs.
Jackson and Lorraine are heard on some of the tapes discussing the recording and creative process of the found tracks.
Musgrove said: It was really, really cool to hear Michael Jackson actually talk and joke back and forth.”
One of the unreleased tracks is titled “Don’t Believe It” and seems to refer to the rumors that surrounded the pop star in the media at the time. On another tape, Jackson explained the meaning of his song “Seven Digits” as the identification number of corpses received at the morgue.
One of the most notable tracks on the tape is called “The Truth About Youth” and reportedly features Jackson and L.L. Cool J.
All of Musgrove’s finds are valued in the seven-figure range, and he revealed that he plans to take the tapes to several major auction houses soon to get a decent bid on them.
Musgrove and his attorney contacted Jackson’s estate after finding the tapes, but the estate declined to buy them and instead sent him a letter outlining what the tapes could be used for.
Property told THR: that they have the master recordings.
“Michael Jackson’s estate was presented with DAT copies, NOT the master recordings of Michael’s music, and we confirmed that the actual master recordings were, in fact, already in the estate’s vaults,” a representative for the estate said ownership and exploitation rights belong to MJJP Records and that nothing commercial or otherwise may be done with the DAT copies.”
