Stephon Marbury’s $15 shoe was an attempt to make fashion accessible to everyone.
Stephon Marbury talked about what inspired him to sell the $15 Starbury shoe.
A former New York Knicks player, Marbury took an unusual path for an NBA player. In 2006, Marbury was at the height of his fame and could command a higher price tag than his NBA peers Maxed Out: podcast, Marbury told host Vernon Maxwell what led to his decision.
“I mean $14.98, entry for all the people who can’t afford it. My mom, seven kids, she couldn’t afford it. We grew up on grocery stamps, WIC, everything.” all from the hat.But, me understood the importance of giving backmaking sure we’ve created something that people can relate to,” he said.
Back in April, Marbury spoke with fellow NBA player Carmelo Anthony 19:00 at Brooklyn podcast. He reminded Anthony of the success of the Starbury line. According to him, the shoe sold millions during its short period of production.
Marbury cites the violence that came with luxury goods as a reason to keep costs down, making sure there was ample supply, even for people living below the poverty line.
“I did Starbury. I was doing more numbers than Michael Jordan selling shoes. During this time, when you talk about enlightenment, I was having out-of-body experiences because I was seeing black parents who didn’t have ideal situations where they couldn’t afford shoes, leaving the expense $200 to walk out with ten bags.”
In 2015, the entrepreneur called out Michael Jordan and Nike for the drastic labeling of their products revive the Starbury shoe line after the company filed for bankruptcy in 2009, according to MSN.
“Jordan stole the hat. Kids are dying because of shoes and I don’t care about this guy’s face. Times will change,” he wrote on X.
Jordan Brand has yet to deliver, according to Sportico, the shoe is projected to reach $7 billion sale of dollars in 2024
Original Starburys sell for $325 on EBay, Marbury would probably cringe at the knowledge.
