One of college football’s most storied rivalries takes place Saturday. For the 125th time in the prestigious history of their rivalry, the army i marine will face thousands of people, participating in a very traditional game.
The two teams first played against each other in 1890, as Navy beat Army CNN. Then, in 1930, the clash between the two rivals officially became an annual event.
Army vs. Navy game traditions
Over the years, the rivalry has seen traditions that include the 300-mile Army Marathon that runs from campus to Northwest Stadium, where the ball is thrown. In the final leg of the race, the Army Marathon Team is joined by members of the 13th Marine Company.
Traditions also include the Patriot Games, a competition between midshipmen and cadets. Teams will compete in four contests Friday to determine who will earn the most points and take home honors at halftime of Saturday’s football game.
Game day begins with the Corps of Cadets and the Midshipmen Brigade making the first innings. The group includes students from both schools who parade in formation on the field before taking their seats in the stands.
What is a “prisoner exchange”?
The festivities continue with the “prisoner exchange,” which includes students from West Point and the Naval Academy. These students, who take classes at their rival institution as part of their training for joint command operations, gather in the field and join their peers from their home institution. The teammates can then enjoy the rest of the game with their teammates.
What time is the game Army vs. Navy this year and which channel will it be?
This year’s edition of the rivalry will take place at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland. Scheduled for 3 pm ET, the matchup will be televised on CBS.
Colin Ramos, a Navy contributor, said it’s an honor to carry on the tradition.
“This game represents more than us, the players,” Ramos told CNN. “All the people who have come before us have served this country. They sacrificed their lives for this country.”
