The brutal killings occurred on November 13, 2022, when four students: Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin, were fatally stabbed in a house outside the campus in Moscow, Idaho.
The attack led to national care and research for months. Authorities detained Kohberger, a 28 -year -old Doctorate in Criminology. The student, in December 2022, accused him of four accusations of first degree murder and theft count, according to Cnn and 6ABC Philadelphia.
Dylan Mortensen and Bethany Funke are the two roommates who survived the unharmed killings.
“I am awakening,” was one of the texts that Mortensen sent to Funke, according to non -sealed court documents obtained by CNN. The roommates were identified by their initials in the court records, with messages describing a man masked black inside his home. Police believe it was around the time the students died.
The two women recalled to have seen a masked man in the house
The conversation took place almost eight hours before the roommates called 911 to report the killings, according to CNN. The roommates had left the night and returned late to their shared house. The next day, police discovered four stabbed until deathNo forced entry signs or struggle. Mortensen explained what he heard in police that night.
He recalled having heard what he thought was Goncalves playing with his dog at about 4 a.m. Mortensen made a text message to Goncalves and called his roommates, but did not receive a response, according to the judicial documents published above obtained by CNN.
Mortensen and Funke sent messages again and again at 4:22 AM, expressing confusion and fear. Mortensen mentioned seeing a man carrying a ski mask and continued to say how they were “detached” to the situation.
Kohberger’s trial is planned for August
Several hours later, around 10:23 AM, Mortensen tried to contact Goncalves and Mogen again, but did not receive a response. Shortly afterwards, Morgensen and Funke made a chaotic call 911, during which they struggled to communicate with the offices, and reported that 20-year-old Kernodle was unconscious.
According to court records, the office finished the call after the officers arrived and did not document full details of what happened. Prosecutors have confirmed that they expect the two roommates to testify at the trial, which is scheduled for some time in August.
The defense lawyers of the defendant Kohberger, who has declared themselves not guilty, have presented reasons to eliminate the death penalty as an option, citing great tests that make it impossible to review the process.
