For the first time in eight decades, there is a great concern for the United States Social security The administration may not be able to give payments to the beneficiaries. Concern comes as a Elon MuskThe Department of Government Efficiency (or DOGE) continues to promote changes to the Social Security and the mass cuts of staff that cause fruits in the system.
More than 72.5 million Americans are at risk of losing their monthly profits due to the disruption caused by DOGE, CNBC reported. Former Maryland governor Martin O’Malley told CNBC that Social Security System interruptions could occur frequently and for longer periods of time.
“Ultimately, you will see the collapse of the system and an interruption of the benefits,” O’Malley told CNBC. “I think you will see it in the next 30 to 90 days.”
While Musk criticizes Social Security Administration’s systems and technologies, O’MALLEY urges Congress to give the agency more funding for technology. Although DOGE is not a federal department, Musk has continued to reduce funding for various government agencies, as Donald Trump led him to direct the task.
Jill Hornick, a union official of the American Federation of Local Government, 1395, said that the administration’s efforts to reduce social security could be even worse than his plan for cutting medicaid.
“The North -American public must understand that one of their main social security networks is at great danger,” Hornick told CNBC.
Hornick said that people who currently receive benefits from Social Security may not be affected by interruption. However, there could be problems for people who process new claims, Hornick said. Without Social Security employees, it will take longer to process claims for retirement or disability benefits, according to Hornick.
Rich Couture, spokesman for the AFGE SSA General Committee, a union that represents Social Security employees across the country, said that DOGE has listed about 45 Social Security offices that could be closed in the coming months.
“If they close these offices occupied in very populated areas, I would suggest that there is no charge in this country that a lease, especially in rural areas, said,” said Couture.
Since the Social Security was established more than 80 years ago, monthly payments have been delivered to the beneficiaries without interruption. Now, however, it’s not clear what will happen in the coming months.
