Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has demonstrated Most recently her commitment to global impact through a week-long transformational service initiative in Liberia. Under the leadership of International Regional Director Cary J. Clark, members from across the organization’s international region have come together to implement projects aligned with their 2022-2026 theme, “Rising to Higher Levels of Service and Brotherhood,” led by International President and CEO Danette Anthony. Reed.
This initiative represented the first regional service project in the International Zone and focused on four critical areas: empowering families, building economic wealth, enhancing the environment, and uplifting local communities. Through partnerships with Liberian schools and organizations, including Kpor Town Public School, Owensgrove Public High School, Mother Comfort Christ Miracle of Faith School, and Our Children’s Future, Inc., the foundation has directly impacted nearly 1,000 students and families.
Efforts to address food insecurity and menstrual health were among the project’s highlights. Members distributed hundreds of Child Hunger Initiative Power Kits (CHIPP) to alleviate hunger and provided menstrual hygiene kits to combat menstrual poverty, a major barrier to girls’ education in Liberia.
In addition to meeting immediate needs, Alpha Kappa Alpha members have contributed to improving the educational environment in the long term. Volunteers planted a garden, renovated playground equipment, and painted school buildings, creating more welcoming and functional spaces for students.
Former Liberian President and Alpha Kappa Alpha member Ellen Johnson Sirleaf praised the initiative, saying, “The International District of AKA Liberia has done well. They have really uplifted the local community. And thanks to the numbers they have done, they have been able to evaluate and maximize the efforts of the local chapter to meet the greatest needs of children and women who They live in fragile conditions. Alpha Kappa Alpha is a wonderful gift to our country!
Carrie J. Clark, International Regional Director, emphasized the profound impact of the initiative. “Global influence and service are the lifeblood of Alpha Kappa Alpha,” she said. “What is particularly powerful about this initiative in Liberia is how it resonates with our mission. The work we do is changing the lives of young black girls, many of whom miss school due to menstrual poverty. By providing reusable sanitary pads and educating about Menstrual hygiene, we give young women the opportunity to stay in school, pursue education, and change the course of their lives – and their families’ futures. This is not just a service project; it is a powerful step towards social transformation.
This initiative was organized by the Eta Beta Omega Chapter, the first chapter established in the International District, under the leadership of Chapter President Marcel J. Abdullah, Pacific Group Coordinator Clarine Simpson Vaughn, and Service Project Leader Carolyn Clark. Members from 11 countries in the international region participated in the meeting, including Liberia, the Bahamas, the US Virgin Islands, Germany, South Korea, Bermuda, Japan, Canada, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates and Nigeria.
Alpha Kappa Alpha’s work in Liberia embodies its enduring legacy of leadership, community empowerment and global impact. By addressing critical needs and promoting sustainable change, the organization continues to pave the way for a brighter and more equitable future around the world.
