Nikki Giovanni, poet, activist, author, educator, and celebrated poet of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., passed away peacefully on December 9, 2024, at the age of 81. She was surrounded by love with her life partner. , Virginia “Jenny” Fowler by her side.
“The celebrated poet, icon of the Black Arts Movement, whose poems of wit, wonder, and wisdom were celebrated in children’s books, on major theater and television shows, and in more than two dozen best-selling poetry collections, died peacefully on December 9, 2024, with her life partner, Virginia (Jenny) Fowler, by her side,” read an announcement from her friend and fellow writer Renee Watson, according to CNN.
Giovanni’s remarkable career spanned decades, during which she mesmerized audiences with her sharp wit, provocative prose, and bold insights into civil rights, social justice, gender, and race. She has authored dozens of poetry collections, essays, anthologies, and more than 10 children’s books, cementing her status as a literary icon. At Virginia Tech, where she served as professor emeritus in the Department of English, her legacy has been celebrated with numerous honors, including the Rosa L. Parks’ Woman of Courage Award, American Book Award, Langston Hughes Award, and Virginia Governor’s Award. for the Arts, the Emily Couric Leadership Award, and seven NAACP Image Awards. During her illustrious life, Giovanni also received 27 honorary degrees, reflecting her profound influence on literature and society.
As a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, Giovanni embodied the sorority’s principles of sisterhood, scholarship, and service. Her membership in the illustrious fraternity and her education at Fisk University, a historically black university, shaped her path as a cultural icon and advocate for the black community.
