In July, nine members of the spring 1994 cohort of the Gamma Epsilon chapter of Omega Psi Phi fraternity at Hampton University set off on a trip to Accra, Ghana. Marking the 30th anniversary of their crossing, the journey celebrated their enduring bond and shared commitment to give back. The group, accompanied by the Provost and Assistant Dean, donated 100 Chromebooks to New Legion International School, a transformative gift for the school that previously only had four working computers for 300 students.
Todd Inman shared with Hampton University Office of Alumni Affairs How the idea was conceived during the Covid-19 pandemic. “The Lord inspired me to tell the Bruh family that we must take a big journey with each other during our lives,” he said. “Since we’re all healthy and present, let’s make the 30th anniversary our big trip.” The brothers embraced the vision and spent three years planning the experiment.

The line partnered with the Tau Chi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity in Ghana to coordinate logistics. Tau Chi support facilitated a community service event at New Legion International School, where brothers interacted with students and teachers about health, mental wellness and education. Their financial donation enabled the school to purchase desks and paint to improve its interior design.
According to the article by Hampton University Office of Alumni AffairsAnthony Smith, assistant principal at Virginia, facilitated the Chromebook donation. “Seeing the children showing their appreciation for our gift brought joy to our hearts,” they quoted him as saying. “We hope these Chromebooks will help prepare students with the tools needed to compete in the global digital society.”

“Ghana was a soul-satisfying trip,” Rick Grimes said. Hampton University Office of Alumni Affairs. “All elements of our brotherhood, ancestors and spirituality were compatible.” Their journey highlighted the transformative impact of teamwork, and demonstrated that the connections formed at Hampton University can transcend borders and leave an indelible mark on the world.
