Details on the arrest of a Kansas mother who allegedly put her baby in an oven
PEOPLE: reports that Mariah Thomas is now charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with her child’s death.On February 10, the Jackson County District Attorney announced that Thomas was charged with child endangerment and first degree child endangerment.
Michael Mansour, director of communications, and prosecutor Jean-Peter Baker shared an update on the case, explaining that Mariah admitted she intended to put her 1-month-old baby to sleep but accidentally put the baby in a hot oven.
according to Kansas City Star Maria’s 1-month-old baby died at a Manheim Park home on Feb. 9. Kansas City police responded to a “not breathing infant” call just before 1:30 p.m. Court documents show that the child has obvious burns and melted clothing.
PEOPLE shared that Thomas called an unidentified adult to report his alleged wrongdoing, according to court documents. “I thought I put her crib in and accidentally put it in the oven.” Thomas reportedly explained. The unidentified person was missing when Thomas called hysterically about the child.
In an official press release, Jackson County District Attorney Gene Peters Baker praised first responders and prosecutors for their diligent efforts. “We appreciate all the first responders who worked at this scene and the prosecutors who went to the scene to file these charges.” Baker said:

“We acknowledge the horrific nature of this tragedy and our hearts are heavy with the loss of this precious life. We trust the criminal justice system to respond appropriately to these horrific circumstances.”

According to The Kansas City Star, Mariah Thomas remains in custody on $100,000 bail, with her trial set for January 13, 2025. She has pleaded not guilty at this time.
