Edward Waters University is proud to announce the induction of the Reverend RB Holmes Jr., a longtime and important member of the Board of Trustees, into the Florida A&M University Hall of Fame. It’s an honor Rev. It highlights Holmes’ exceptional contributions to FAMU and his lasting influence within the community.
In a heartfelt response to the recognition, Rev. Holmes said, “It is a great honor to join the mighty FAMU. Hall of Fame. It is something I will cherish and honor for years to come. I thank the committee of the Hall of Fame for giving me such a rating.” He celebrated this milestone with his family, church members and EWU leadership, including Edward Waters University President and CEO Dr. A. Zachary expressed his joy in sharing with Faison.
Steps taken at FAMU
Throughout his career, Rev. Holmes has been a pillar of community service, educational leadership, and spiritual direction. His extensive contributions include serving as senior pastor of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Tallahassee, founder of Bethel Christian Academy, and an active member of numerous civic and community organizations.
His commitment to FAMU is particularly noteworthy. Rev. Holmes rallied the community to save athletic programs such as golf, swimming and tennis and raised more than $250,000 in support of them. In addition to fundraising, he has mentored countless FAMU athletes and famously served as a chaplain and mentor to members of the football and basketball teams.
Reflecting on his experiences at FAMU, Rev. Holmes shared, “I love seeing HBCUs not only survive, but thrive. Serving as chair of EWU’s academic and athletic committees gives me a front-row seat to understand the importance of our institutions. Moreover, to appreciate the value of student-athletes excelling in the classroom and on the sports fields.”
Makes EWU proud
Through years of dedicated service at EWU, Rev. Holmes has made significant impacts as chairman of the Academic Affairs and Intercollegiate Athletics Committees.
Dr. Faison noted Reverend Holmes’ invaluable contributions: “We are extremely proud to have Reverend Holmes inducted into the FAMU Hall of Fame. His leadership and commitment to EWU has been invaluable, especially in the development of our athletic programs. This recognition by FAMU underscores the quality of leaders we are fortunate to have on our Board of Trustees.
Rev. Holmes hopes this recognition will inspire FAMU and EWU students to give back to their communities. He emphasized that “giving is an indicator of a person’s values and commitment. Giving is healthy and inspiring.”
Looking to the future, Rev. Holmes aims to use his newfound recognition to continue his education and community service efforts.
