At a celebration at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Christopher Scroggins was honored as the first member of his family to attain the rank of military officer. Scroggins earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and was proud to be part of a family legacy that spanned three generations of UAPB alumni. “My great-grandmother, grandmother and now I are all graduates of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff,” she said proudly.
Scroggins’ next steps include supporting UAPB ROTC program in recruiting efforts after graduation. He sees the role as an opportunity to give back to his alma mater before transferring to Fort Carson Army Base in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Reflecting on her time at UAPB, Scroggins expressed her gratitude to the faculty and staff who shaped her journey. “You can’t beat the people you meet who help shape you when you graduate from UAPB,” he said.
His family’s military heritage runs deep; Several of his relatives, including his grandfather and five great-uncles, served after the draft and encouraged Scroggins as he charted his course in the armed forces. His wife Shakirah shares his passion for military service. They are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their first child together.
Scrogg’s journey to becoming an officer
Scroggins’ academic and military journey began when he enrolled in UAPB’s LIONS Program, which aims to ease the transition from high school to college. Initially unsure of his direction, he credits his grandmother, UAPB English professor Mary Parker, for encouraging him to succeed. “My grandmother really made sure I did what I was supposed to do. In fact, it turned out to be a good thing, “he said. His grandmother gladly participated in the commissioning ceremony.
Originally starting out as a mass communications major, Scroggins turned his attention to psychology after realizing a desire to help others during his time in the military. His journey included a one-year break during which he considered joining the Air Force. But contact with the US military decisively changed his course.
Through rigorous training and personal challenges, Scroggins became a leader who excelled in basic training and early promotion.
With the support of friends and family, Scroggins has achieved personal milestones and aims to inspire others to reach their potential.
