As Alabama A&M University prepares for its monumental 150th anniversary in 2025, the institution has officially launched the Torchbearer Campaign. The campaign aims to raise an impressive $15 million through individual contributions over the next year. This initiative is part of a broader effort to create totality 150 million dollarswill significantly increase campus resources and support student scholarships.
The launch of the campaign by the retired vice president for research and development Dr. It was marked by a successful opening reception by Dorothy W. Houston. Generous attendees contributed $50,000 to fundraising efforts during the reception. Key figures at the event included 150th Anniversary Campaign Chairman Robert Holmes and State Representatives Laura Hall and Anthony Daniels.
Relying on alums
President Daniel K. Wims expressed great enthusiasm for alumni involvement, saying, “We want $15 million from alumni. The university will attract more than 10,000 graduates to achieve this goal. We want to show that our graduates support any leading institution at the same level.” The campaign highlights the important role alumni play in strengthening community ties and advancing AAMU’s mission of excellence.
The Torchbearer Campaign encourages alumni and friends to host or participate in fundraising events with a goal of raising at least $25,000 each. Upcoming events are planned in major cities including Los Angeles, Atlanta, Phoenix and New York.
Funds raised will go toward major improvements to campus infrastructure, particularly within STEM programs, and will increase scholarship opportunities. “This campaign will not only honor our rich history, but also position Alabama A&M as a leading institution for innovation, community engagement and student success,” said President Robert Holmes.
150th anniversary event
The year-long campaign will culminate in a grand celebration during Homecoming 2025. The ceremonial lighting of the William Hooper Council Eternal Flame will symbolize commitment to AAMU’s legacy for the next 150 years.
