Hollywood pauses as devastating fires continue in LA
The beginning of the year is always a busy time in Hollywood, with movies and TV shows returning to production and awards season in full swing. But now the award shows, premieres and production are all on hold.
The Oscar nominations, which were to be announced on January 17, have been postponed to January 19. Voting started today and will end on January 12.
In an email to members, the Academy said that given the fire situation, it had extended the voting period by two days, to January 14, thus extending the announcement by two days.
Instead of sending a press release to reporters, the Screen Actors Guild personally canceled the nomination announcement. “Additionally, the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, which operates a disaster relief fund, supports members of the artist community affected by the devastating fires in Los Angeles,” the Guild said in that release. Many actors live in affected areas.
The Critics’ Choice Awards, scheduled for this Sunday, have been postponed.
“Due to the catastrophic wildfires in Southern California, the 30th annual Critics’ Choice Awards have been postponed from January 12th to the 26th,” CCA said in a statement.
CCA CEO Joey Berlin said, “This ongoing tragedy has already had a profound impact on our community. All our thoughts and prayers are with those fighting the devastating fires and all those affected.”
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has canceled its annual Tea Party. In a statement, the Academy said, “In light of the dangerous winds and wildfires in Los Angeles, we are canceling this weekend’s BAFTA Tea Party. The safety of our colleagues, friends and peers in Los Angeles remains our highest priority, and our thoughts go out to everyone.
On the red carpet, George Pennacchio was told that the AFI Awards Dinner scheduled for Friday has been canceled.
Talk shows and game shows like “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “After Midnight” and “The Price is Right” took a break from filming during the day.
We’re told that several series have been suspended, at least for today, including “Doctor Odyssey,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Hacks” and “Suits: LA.”
Amazon MGM Studios and Universal Studios have canceled last night’s premieres of Undurable and Wolf Man.
“Better Man” and “The Pitt” premiered on Wednesday as well.
“Due to the hazardous conditions affecting Los Angeles, we are canceling tomorrow’s premiere of ‘Better Man,'” a Paramount spokesperson said. “Our thoughts are with those affected by the devastating fires caused by these conditions, and we urge everyone to stay safe and follow the directions and orders of local officials and government agencies.”
