HBCU News – Will tariffs drive more people to shop secondhand?

By Rachel Treisman

Tariffs are careful about how many Americans spend and maintain a lot of American money among trade wars and general economic uncertainty.

Consumer beliefs, in March, instructions of the expectations of the conference council, were reduced to 12 to 65.2, based on the short-term worldview of consumers’ work, income and labor market.

And this, President Trump, including many countries, including the Chinese and European Union, announced a new period of concerns that do not want revenge taxes from many countries or in a possible decline. This week, when declaring a 90-day delay, the 10% initial tariff shall remain in force for the goods of all countries.

Tariffs are preparing to increase the price of all goods from groceries to technology to technology. All US clothing and shoes are not exempted from other countries, including tariffs, and now import other countries and shoes that face 145%.

“The current situation is not visible because … All major clothing suppliers to the US market will face the tariff hike,” Sheng Lu, Delaware University, Fashion and Clothing Research Prof. “Most likely, these additional source costs will pass to consumers.”

Price trips can inspire recipients in retail stores such as saving buyers, eBay and ThRelup or online retail stores or online retail stores.

Many people – especially Gen Zin members already do it. The 2025 report with the Capital One Shopping study, about one-third of about one-third of all the clothes and clothing purchased in the United States in the last year.

According to an annual sales report broadcast in March, 58% of buyers received second clothes in 2024 in 2024.

The report predicts that the market will continue to grow only in a global scale and in the United States, at least due to the new government policy around the secondary tail until the secondary well.

Threddup research will look for secondary, more favorable choices, if 59% of consumers and 69% of millennia politics are more expensive. Secondhand Shopping, as during the Covid-19 pandemic, has historically developed during economic uncertainty.

“If an economic crisis, a recession or something like this, there are more people who will start the seller who previously purchased.

Meyer and this time this time he expects the retailers waiting to be true. Of course, the purchase has its benefits – but more than one expert is aware of NPR, not a complete silver bullet.

“It may want to get the secondary clothing market, or more consumers to wait for more consumers,” consumers can buy second clothes, “he said. “But I do not think that the second clothing will be immunity to the tariff effects.”

People don’t want to shop – or sorry

It is necessary to get a new one for a second store to become a second store. LU and experts will be more hesitant to buy new clothes and forgive older clothes in tougher times.

In the end, it may limit the supply of second clothes, and in turn, prices can rise up.

“I do not think that the tariff war is a good or exciting thing for the second clothing market,” he repeated.

Meyer’s trading group, “It was never happened in the past,” he said, low-storey supply.

Indeed, some people can be a new motivation to sell unwanted clothes and accessories, via retailers who offer loans in online, installed shops or products directly used (such as pathononies).

In both cases, experts say that the tariffs can take months or even years to see their effects in the second market – be positive, negative or insignificant.

“Prices for our consumption such as clothing are highly high in previous decades, no matter what, this is a history professor at the University of North Carolina, which is in the field of material culture.

Shopping can be a chance to re-think completely

Economic pressures can only make people buy, not just where they are shopping.

Both the secondary market and Americans have changed significantly in recent decades, Le Zotte. There is an increasingly specialized place to shop for clothes – and more pressure to do it.

“The Fashion Industry Post was really good in the acceleration of the chapters for the planned obsolescence and fashion costumes of World War II,” he said. “So you can’t wear the colors of the season clothes or panths last season last season.”

Many Americans to stand on the feet, pick up clothes from cheaper fashion stores like Shein. Products such as Sheen and Temu from China’s e-commerce companies must cost the De Minimis shipping gap on May 1.

Fast fashion items were not made for the second market, Le Zotte is not likely to sell very little, and it is likely not working with many owners.

It would like to see that this economic point has changed in the way he thought to buy clothes.

“It is perhaps desirable, but it is like things that people decide to buy more durable, long-term clothes, but they decide to have very different clothes in their individual wars,” he said.

Lu admits that it is an opportunity to reflect the moment.

“If consumers are reminiscent of whether they have to spend a lot of money to buy the actual needs or really new clothes for clothing … maybe this may be all this silver (tariffs) silver.”

He encourages consumers to make their homework self-toss, and to control the price fluctuations for their own closets to the things they really need.

He says stores want people to stay shopping, and consumers still have higher prices, but there will still be options.

Le Zotte encourages buyers to think that it is continuous and not only in the environment, but to make purchases. Recommends people to choose the items they can wear for a long time, both are constantly and because they are not only a trend.

“It is a good idea to cultivate people and learn what good to look at them … and hold them.” “Although someone says there is no fashion, someone or some advertisement is not a cutting jeans or color that is in this season – if this season and physically fit, continue to him.”
