Two distinguished faculty members at the Alabama State University Cancer Research Center have significantly increased their research efforts with pilot grants totaling $200,000. CRC founder and director Dr. Manoj Mishra and the researcher of the center Dr. Parul Dubey was awarded these grants from the Alabama Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Dr. Mishra expressed his gratitude for the funding, emphasizing its crucial role in the advancement of his breast cancer projects. “Cancer Research Center of ASU Pilot grants that will greatly assist us in our two breast cancer research projects have been awarded to me and Dr. “The ASU Center continues to gain recognition, focus and funding to do what it can to learn more about this disease and hopefully one day help end it.”

Awarded funds will be distributed in $50,000 installments over two years. This will allow both researchers to conduct different but complementary research on breast cancer. Dr. Mishra’s project “Nanostructured copper oxide aptasensor for non-invasive early detection of 8-oxo-dG in breast cancer diagnosis” aims to develop innovative methods for early detection.
Meanwhile, Dr. Dubey’s research, “Bridging the Gap: Integrating Genetic Insights and FDA-Approved Treatments to Revolutionize Treatment for African American Breast Cancer,” seeks to improve treatment options specifically for African American women. This demographic faces unique challenges with breast cancer.
BCRFA has awarded more than $1.1 million to fund 22 different projects at seven Alabama research institutions that reflect its commitment to advancing life-saving breast cancer research. Other beneficiaries include Auburn University, HudsonAlpha Biotechnology Institute, Tuskegee UniversityO’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB, the University of Alabama, and the Mitchell Cancer Institute at the University of South Alabama.
BCRFA President and CEO Beth Davis commented on the fund’s impact: “This year’s investment of $1,125,000 reinforces our continued reputation as a catalyst for important research in Alabama. Our support enables research ranging from new early detection strategies to improved innovation in treatment. Ultimately, these investments provide hope and improved opportunities for Alabamians and others battling breast cancer.
The collaboration between ASU and BCRFA highlights important work within Alabama’s research community.
