As the holiday season approaches each year, Alabama State University graduate Lane Harper consistently embodies the spirit of giving. With a heartfelt commitment to helping those she describes as “the least, the last and the lost,” Harper has become a beacon of hope for families in need in Jefferson County, Alabama.
This year marks Harper’s fifth consecutive vacation season He distributed more than 1,000 turkeysCash grants and essential food items to individuals and families living below the poverty line in Fultondale. Organized through her nonprofit organization, the Power of Life Foundation, the initiative demonstrates her commitment to uplifting the community and ensuring everyone can enjoy the holiday table.
Harper, proud member State of Alabama Class of 1994, he made his mark as a talented point guard and shooting guard on the Hornets basketball team during his college years. Her connection to ASU remains strong as she actively engages with the university and supports its mission in various capacities. “I’ve been blessed in so many ways,” Harper says. “Helping people celebrate the holiday season and especially knowing that others care about their well-being is important to me and to those who help me in any way.”
Since becoming an officer with the Birmingham Police Department in 2008, Harper has dedicated his life to service both in and out of the military. At a recent holiday gift drive at Fultondale Elementary School, Harper saw a great turnout. Most attendees faced waits of nearly five hours. “This long wait only shows how many citizens in Jefferson County need help and care,” he said.
Harper founded the Life Force Foundation to economically and socially empower underserved residents throughout Birmingham. She and her dedicated team of volunteers work tirelessly to promote health and well-being, overcome adversity, and support diverse demographics, including women, children, seniors, veterans, people experiencing homelessness, and at-risk youth.
