Apple Bistro
As the Bay Area is home to a large East African community, Ethiopia’s food scene is flavorful and authentic. Mela Bistro is a bright and elegant two-story restaurant serving fresh and innovative Ethiopian cuisine. Try Mela’s classic Ethiopian dishes with a little twist, like colorful vegetarian plates with spicy lentils. Located in Swan Market, The Cook and Her Farmer is the perfect place to stop for a casual lunch while exploring the sights in Auckland. If you’re feeling hungry, try the shucked oysters or the fried oyster po’boy. They offer outdoor seating, so you can enjoy the California sun while enjoying a delicious local meal.
Cupcakin shop
The Cook and the Farmer’s Steps are some of the best cupcakes I’ve ever tasted. Enjoy one of the many creative flavors such as key lime pie or their classic red velvet. Grab a dessert or grab a box to go later.
Kinfolks
Kinfolx is anything but your average coffee shop. Located in downtown Oakland, this beautiful space doubles as a wine bar and meeting place for community events. Kinfolk is a great place for a casual drink and snack, or drop in for a glass of wine with friends later. Check out their black-owned wine selection and specials!
Calabash
This new restaurant and market combines Afro-Caribbean and Iranian flavors. Try their Iranian spread or brucho – the french fries alone are worth the trip!
Everett and Jones
For over 50 years, Everett & Jones BBQ has provided heart, hope and flavor to the Oakland community. Originally located on historic 7th Street in West Oakland, this BBQ joint served as a cultural center for Oakland’s black community in the 60s and 70s. Now located on Broadway, you won’t want to miss the amazing BBQ brisket or the many sides like mac and cheese, collard greens and cornbread.

With great vibes, food and flavor, Sobre Mesa is a must-visit for Bay Area travelers. This Afro-Latin cocktail lounge is known for its handcrafted drinks and sweet tapas. Sobre Mesa’s bright colors and design make it perfect for a fun night out or a special romantic dinner for two.

Located in the Oakland Museum of California, Town Fare offers a variety of soul food favorites like shrimp and grits, chicken and waffles, and mac and cheese. Urban Fare also offers unique fusion dishes such as curry spring rolls and jackfruit carnitas tacos. Come see the Auckland Museums Angela Davis exhibition and finish your visit with a delicious bite at Town Far.
Mushin
Mushin is a popular spot among Aucklanders for its amazing vibe and delicious cocktails. Boutique Sports Lounge is Nigerian owned and serves a unique menu that combines American, African American and Nigerian cuisine. Stop by with friends to watch your favorite team and enjoy their famous avocado margarita.
Solly Vegan
True to its name, Solely Vegan offers delicious plant-based soul food. From gumbo to jambalaya to Cajun spaghetti, their food is full of flavor. Lovers of soul food classics like fried chicken and mac and cheese won’t be disappointed with these vegan dishes. Solly Vegan is a unique gem located next to some of Auckland’s most popular bars and lounges.

Kissel Uptown is a great option for Bay Area visitors. The hotel offers elegant exclusive rooms and a wide range of services. Kissel Uptown is within walking distance of many black-owned restaurants, bars and hangouts. For dessert, we recommend the Kissel Donuts!
For those who enjoy spending time outdoors, we encourage you to walk around Oakland’s Lake Merritt, which is located near great restaurants like Lake Chalet and Portal. You can also get some food to go and hike to Reinhart Redwood Regional Park. You won’t be disappointed with the beautiful Redwoods or great hiking trails!
