The Texas Southern women’s basketball team scored an important victory over Jackson State Thursday night. They set the tone early and won 69-54 at home.
Snapping an undefeated streak in conference play, the win puts TSU atop the SWAC standings and breaks Jackson State’s undefeated conference record.
TSU also ended Jackson State’s 35-game SWAC Regular Season winning streak that stretches to 2023. It was JSU’s first win over JSU since 2019, when they had a 10-game winning streak.
Jackson State suffered a regular season loss last time in the SWAC January 14, 2023 vs. Prairie View.
Head coach Vernette Skite emphasized that having fans in the gym really gives the ladies an extra boost.
“It feels good to win,” he said. “Obviously we haven’t been in this venue historically since I was here to beat Jackson State, so it’s been a long time, so it’s great for the fans to do it.”
With students back on campus for the first time this semester, Texas Southern fired up their energy and started strong, ending the first quarter with a 22-13 lead. The Lady Tigers kept their momentum going in the second quarter, outscoring JSU 14-4 over the final six minutes as TSU extended its lead to 41-25.
The third quarter continued Texas Southern’s dominance, with the team holding a 63-38 advantage at the end of the quarter. Jackson State struggled to keep up despite the efforts of the scorers.
Alaysia Fantroy led the offense with 20 points and 6 rebounds, while Treasure Thompson had 9 points and 5 rebounds.
