Delaware State shot 50 percent from 3-point range in Thursday’s 73-60 victory against the Grambling State Tigers at Mohegan Sun Arena. Chris Paul on the HBCU Challenge.
The Hornets (6-6) had four players score in double figures, led by Robert Smith’s 16 points and four assists. Martaz Robinson had 15 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals, while Muneer Newton had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Delaware State held off Grambling 36-33 on Thursday in a game led by Newton’s 10 boards. The Hornets also had 13 offensive rebounds and 14 second-chance points.
Delaware State’s defense held Grambling shooters to just 37.9 percent from the field, including 16.7 percent from three-point range.
Delaware State started strong, taking a 29-25 lead into halftime. Delaware State did most of its first-half damage in the paint, scoring 16 of its 29 points from close range.
Delaware State continued to extend that lead after halftime, extending it to 50-43 before going on a 5-0 run that ended with a Robinson three to extend the lead to 55-43 with 7:06 to play.
The Hornets continued to widen the gap and cruised the rest of the way for a 73-60 win. Delaware State made the most of five offensive rebounds to hit eight of its 44 second-chance points in the period.
