Michael Vick has officially been named Norfolk State’s next head football coach.
Norfolk State officially announced Vick was hired in a press release Friday afternoon after it was reported earlier this week that he had agreed to become the school’s next coach.
Vick will be introduced at a news conference at 10 a.m. Monday, the school said in a release.
“I am blessed and humbled by this opportunity to lead, mentor and transform the football program at Norfolk State University,” Vick said. “A prestigious HBCU with a rich athletic history, NSU provides a great environment for students to reach their full potential on the field and, most importantly, in the classroom. I am honored to join the Norfolk State family and welcome your support as we embark on this journey together.”
Vic Dawson will replace Odums. Released last month after a four-year run in which Norfolk State compiled a 15-31 overall record.
“I am thrilled to welcome Michael Vick and his family to the Hampton Roads area to lead our football program,” Norfolk State director of athletics Melody Webb said. “One of the greatest athletes the area has ever seen, Coach Vick’s leadership, knowledge and dedication will pour into the foundational layers of the foundation we will build for Norfolk State football.”
The former NFL quarterback has no formal coaching experience, but told the Virginian-Pilot, “I know how to lead and I know what it takes.”
Vick has hired Apprentice School head coach and offensive coordinator Elton Brown as an assistant, along with former Virginia Tech offensive lineman Dwight Vick, the newspaper reported.
“Coach Vic is one of the most electric athletes to come out of Virginia,” Webb said. “From humble beginnings to massive stardom, we hope his story translates to student-athletes at Norfolk State. “I am confident that our football program will create a continued recruiting pipeline throughout the state of Virginia and across the country with this recruitment.”
