Daniel Welbeck has expressed his gratitude to his Ghanaian parents, crediting their “good genes” for keeping him in top form at 34, as he ages like fine wine in the sport.

The English-born Ghanaian forward has been instrumental for Brighton & Hove Albion under manager Fabian Hurzeler, scoring the winner in their FA Cup fifth-round clash against Newcastle United at St Mary’s.

In extra time, the former Manchester United striker lobbed the ball over goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, securing the visitors’ victory.

Gambia international Yankuba Minteh restored parity for Seagulls in the 44th minute, 22 minutes after in-form Alexander Isak gave the Magpies the lead.

The game ended 1-1 in regulation time and went to extra time. Newcastle had the upper hand after Ghanaian international Tariq Lamptey was sent off in stoppage time.

Fabian Schar almost won it for Eddie Howe’s side from the resulting free-kick but it was ruled out for offside.

Welbeck finished it off Brighton with just six minutes to the end of extra time. Brighton advanced to the next stage and now have to face Nottingham Forest in the quarter-finals.

Reflecting on the match, Welbeck said:

It is great to get the winning goal. It was a solid team performance. There was a lot going on in the game, lots of ups and downs, but we stuck with it. I’m so proud of the lads.

He added:

Newcastle can always put you under pressure. They are very dangerous, but we stuck to our guns, and we put in a great shift.
