A head-on crash on an overpass in Idaho Springs sent 13 people to the hospital Thursday afternoon, Idaho Springs Police Chief Nate Buseck said in a news release.

All but one of those people were in a single vehicle and were Iraqi immigrants staying at a community center in the Denver area.

Idaho Springs officers responded at about 12:15 p.m. to the overpass of Colorado Boulevard at Interstate 70 to reports of the crash. The driver of a black Mercedes Sprinter van traveling east on the overpass crossed the double-yellow lane and entered the west lane, striking a Toyota 4Runner head-on, according to the news release.

The Colorado Boulevard Interstate 70 ramps were closed after the crash but have since reopened.

There were 13 people, including the driver, in the van, which the news release states is owned by 2nd Home Adult Community Center, an adult day care center.

The 12 people from the van and the driver of the Toyota were all taken to hospitals.

St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood received 10 of those patients, hospital spokesperson Brianna DiPilato told The Denver Post over the phone, and all those patients were in stable condition.

Three patients were taken to Lutheran Medical Center, Buseck said. The condition of those three patients was not available Thursday night.

Idaho Springs police did not know the conditions of the Toyota driver or the van occupants.

The driver of the van was cited for careless driving resulting in injury, according to the news release, though there is no indication of impaired driving.
