FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – The Fort Wayne metropolitan area has been ranked fifth in the nation for growth in Black-owned businesses, according to a Brookings Institution report.
From 2017 to 2022, the number of Black-owned businesses in the Summit City grew by 132 new businesses – a more than 200% increase. That growth is why Fort Wayne has been ranked fifth among other large metro areas.
Fort Wayne Mayor Sharon Tucker said she was thrilled by the news.
“The credit for this lies with the local entrepreneurs who have had the courage to pursue their dreams and build a business here,” Tucker said. “Many of them were supported by the people and programs of dedicated partners working to educate, encourage, and provide loans and funding for small businesses and start-ups.”
“In particular, I’m grateful for the support of the Black Chamber of Commerce, Greater Fort Wayne Inc., Brightpoint Development Fund, and the City of Fort Wayne’s Summit City Entrepreneur and Enterprise District (SEED).”
John Urbahns, president and CEO of Greater Fort Wayne Inc., said the growth is “a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit and resilience of our community.”
“At Greater Fort Wayne Inc., we are committed to fostering an environment where businesses of all backgrounds can start, grow, and thrive,” Urbahns said. “This remarkable increase highlights the impact of strategic partnerships, access to resources, and the determination of Black entrepreneurs who are strengthening our local economy.”
“We celebrate this success and remain dedicated to supporting continued growth and opportunity for all.”
