Governor Gavin Newsom has officially proclaimed February 2025 as Black History Month in California, emphasizing the contributions of Black Americans throughout the state’s history, the Governor’s Office announced.
This year’s theme, Black Americans and Labor, explores the deep ties between Black workers, entrepreneurs, and the economy—from the struggle against slavery to the rise of Black business leaders. The proclamation highlights influential figures such as Mary Ellen Pleasant, one of the nation’s first Black millionaires, who used her wealth to support abolition efforts.
The governor also recognized Altadena, a historic hub of Black homeownership and entrepreneurship, and reaffirmed state support as the community recovers from the Eaton fires.
Newsom encouraged Californians to reflect on Black Americans’ vital role in shaping the state’s workforce and economy.
