The cafe is honoring Black artists’ rich heritage and contributions to jazz and soul.
TOLEDO, Ohio — The Peacock Café in downtown Toledo is honoring Black History Month and the contributions of Black Americans through a series of jazz and soul performances.
Beginning Feb. 20 and lasting through the end of the month, the Peacock Café will be hosting Black History celebrations. The events will showcase lives performances from musicians and legends from across the globe and right here in Toledo, while highlighting the contributions of Black artists’ to music history as well as culture.
Events will be at the Peacock Café, located at 2007 Monroe St. from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. Tickets will be sold online, and you can click here for more details. Below is a full list of coming performances:
- Thursday, Feb. 20: Jean Holden & Mike Lorenz – 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
- Monday, Feb. 23: Delfeayo Marsalis, Wendell Harris, and Andre Wright Special Concert – 7 p.m.
- Wednesday, Feb. 26: Martha Reeves Q&A – 7 p.m.
- Thursday, Feb 27: Sky Covington – 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
WTOL 11 spoke with Andre Wright ahead of Thursday night’s first concert. He said he was happy to have more jazz and soul events happening in a city that’s no stranger to jazz or its talent.
“We had some great jazz musicians that came out of Toledo,” Wright told WTOL 11. “Art Tatum, John Hendricks, Stanley Kyle, Mr. Vern Martin.:
Wright said he hopes to promote the importance of jazz through these events.
“This art from is not a lost art form. It’s very alive in America today. Our Black jazz culture: Music.”
While Naima Shamborgaer was not able to perform on Feb. 13, due to a snowstorm, Wright says they will have her at the Peacock in February.
