{KXLG – Rapid City, SD} Firefighters are actively working to suppress the First Thunder Fire, which ignited on private property just after 6 p.m. on Monday. The fire is approximately 3 miles southwest of Rapid City and 2 miles northeast of Colonial Pine Hills.
Federal and local resources are assisting the South Dakota Wildland Fire (SDWF), which is leading the suppression efforts. As of the latest reports, the fire has consumed over 40 acres, primarily within the Black Hills National Forest. Fortunately, no structures are currently threatened by the blaze.
This morning at 8 a.m., authorities transitioned from the SDWF to a Type 3 Incident Management Team, ensuring a more specialized response to the evolving situation.
Critical fire weather conditions are expected to persist throughout the day, with forecasts predicting hot temperatures and relative humidity levels dropping as low as 10 percent. These conditions pose significant challenges to the firefighting efforts.
