Philanthropist Mackenzie Scott has given a $63 million gift to Morgan State University—his second major gift to the institution in less than five years. The school announced.
The latest contribution brings the total to $103 million, up to $103 million with confidence in Morgan’s leadership and influence.
Unlike most major endowments, Scott’s gifts are unrestricted, allowing Morgan State to strategically direct funds. University officials say the money will enhance student success programs and enhance Baltimore’s role as an anchor institution and high-impact research university.
“Mackenzie Scott’s renewed investment in Morgan is a resounding testament to the work we do, not just within our campus, within the communities we serve, but the way we serve communities,” said university President David K. Wilson. “It was an incredible honor to receive a historic gift; it speaks volumes to speak volumes about the confidence in our leadership and our trajectory. It’s more than a philanthropy—it’s a partner in progress.”
Scott’s first gift, a $40 million gift in 2020, remains the largest individual gift in Morgan’s history. This funding leads the “World Sensitive Fund,” the university’s first unrestricted gift, including Additional Philanthropy, Alumus Calvin Tyler and his wife Tina made a record $20 million gift.
Proceeds from the initial gift helped establish urban health capital, the National Center for Ending Educational Disparities, and faculty chairs in brain sciences, cybersecurity engineering, and predictive analytics. Funds also hampered interdisciplinary initiatives such as religion and urban centers.
“We are grateful for donors like Macenzie Scott, whose groundbreaking philanthropy has created a lasting, generational impact at Morgan,” she said. “It confirms our continued confidence that a bold path for our students and our institution is only rising, but not leading.”
