Michael Archer II, the only child of soul legends D’Angelo and Angie Stone, has spoke up after the loss seven months after her father’s untimely death in a car accident.
Archer Jr., 27, shared a statement on Oct. 14, the day D’Angelo died of pancreatic cancer, thanking fans for their love and support.
“I appreciate your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time as it has been a very difficult and sad year for me,” Archer told People. “Please continue to keep me in your thoughts because it won’t be easy, but one thing both my parents have taught me is to be strong and I intend to do just that.”
The singer’s family and the D’Angelo Estate released a statement announcing his death at age 51 after a “long and courageous battle” with cancer.
“Our family’s shining star has dimmed its light for us in this life… After a long and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans worldwide as D’Angelo, has called home and is passing this life today, October 14, 2025,” the estate said.
The announcement continues. “We are saddened that he can only leave behind precious memories with his family, but we are forever grateful for the legacy of extraordinary moving music he left behind.”
Reports indicate that D’Angelo’s health has deteriorated in recent months, as he spent two weeks in hospice after several months in the hospital.
Martin Stone, singer, songwriter and founding member of the hip-hop trio The Sequence, died at the age of 63 in a car accident after performing at the Mardi Gras Association’s Grand Marshal’s Ball in Mobile, Alabama. his family in September filed a wrongful death lawsuitclaiming that Stone initially survived the crash but was fatally struck by the tractor-trailer while trying to get out of the overturned van.
Archer Jr., who performs as Swayvo Train, shared Instagram clip from an episode of MTV’s Heart and Neo-Soul (Ginou and D’Angelo) in May A family heirloom. The video showed him and Stone watching an old interview of D’Angelo in which he discussed the time between his 1995 debut. Brown sugar and 2000s Voodoo with his family and how his son inspired his music.
“I had a son. I started writing for the album after she was born. And this album is dedicated to my son,” D’Angelo said in an interview. “He inspired me not only to write songs, but to become a better person and grow up. And that’s what the album is about. Music is about growth for me, and I grew a lot.”
