Johnson C. Smith’s fight to stay in the CIAA Championship Race It will continue for another week after a 52-27 win over Winston-Salem State.
The Golden Bulls have now snapped their season loss against Virginia Commonwealth and have won four straight as they improve to 7-1 and 4-1 in the CIAA.
It was the third time in the last four games that Johnson C. Smith scored at least 50 points, the most in a season in school history.
Star quarterback Kelvin Durham led an impressive offense for the Golden Bulls, completing 73% of his 351 pass yards and scoring three touchdowns. He also rushed for 74 yards on six attempts, including two touchdowns.
For the second straight game, top 100-plus receivers Deandre Proctor and Brian Lane both combined for 263-of-263 receiving yards, accounting for all of the team’s total touchdowns.
Running back Bobby Smith had his first career touchdown, finishing with 102 rushing yards on 21 attempts and two touchdowns.
Johnson C. Smith led the way in the first half, outgaining Winston-Salem State 253-135 and taking a 28-6 lead.
The Golden Bulls were down three to 10 in the first half on three three-down conversion attempts.
Although the Rams fought bravely, with quarterback Daylin Lee accounting for three touchdowns in the final period, the Golden Bulls were hit with a 60-yard touchdown pass to Proctor.
