Week 10 of HBCU football didn’t give us many surprises, but HBCU Sports’ latest episode has some action.
1. Jackson State (6-2)
Last week: beat Florida A&M 41-16
Next up: Saturday, Nov. 8 at Mississippi Valley State
No problem for Jacobian Morgan, the HBCU national champions, as they entered Bragg Stadium and crushed the buildings Saturday.
Expect more this weekend when they visit Mississippi Valley State, a place JSU has never lost.
2. Alabama State (6-2)
Last week: Defeated prairie prospect 31-28
Next up: VS. Texas south on Saturday, November 8
The Hornet community will be holding their breath after Saturday’s injury to Andrew, but anytime they can rest him, this week against Texas Southern could be the perfect time.
3. Prairie A&M (6-3)
Last week: Lost to Alabama State 31-28
Also: Alabama A&M on Saturday, Nov. 8
The Panthers turned a 14-point second quarter lead into a three-point loss, but with the results of the Swac West, it’s not a huge loss.
Getting back on track at A & MA & M will be key this weekend.
4. Delaware State (6-3)
Last week: Norfolk State defeated 27-20
Next up: Morgan State, Friday, Nov. 7
DSU survived a short week to capture the Short Week (and Pomp and Circumstance) Norfolk state and maintain a share of first place in the Meac.
Morgan State, which scored 20 points in the fourth quarter against South Carolina State on Saturday, will be ready to play the spoiler and the Hornets should be ready for another nationally televised game.
5. South Carolina State (6-3)
Last week: Morgan State defeated 36-30
Next: Howard on Saturday November 8
South Carolina State almost blew a 26-point lead away to Morgan State on Saturday, so it’s safe to say they’ll need to play 60 minutes of good football to stay in the Meac Title race.
6. North Carolina Central (6-3)
Last week: Howard beat 35-14
Next: Vs. Norfolk State Saturday November 8th
The Eagles responded as most expected as they pulled off a wire-to-wire win over Howard.
Next up is an injured Norfolk State team, but Trap games are a thing in November, so the center is extra primed for that.
7. Gramling (6-3)
Last week: ALABAMA beat A&M 13-10
After that: Vs. Bethune-Cookman Saturday Nov. 8
Special teams did it again Saturday for the G-Men, who are now down in the fourth quarter. That could be a problem against a Bethune-Cookman offense that can score in bunches.
8. Bethune-Cookman (5-4)
Last week: defeated Mississippi Valley State 42-34
Next up: Saturday 8th November at Guaranteed
BCU, the Mississippi Valley State Team, traveled west to west, now filled with the Wildcats’ offensive firepower.
9. Texas Southern (4-4)
Last week: Lost to Alcorn State 33-14
Next up: Saturday at 8 at Alabama State
TSU’s SWAC West Title is toast following a loss that prevented Alcorn State from stumbling, so now that’s a record they can hope for. It will be difficult to enter the state of Alabama to achieve this goal.
10. Howard (4-5)
Last week: 35-14 at North Carolina Central
Next up: Saturday, Nov. 8 at South Carolina State
The Bison were never able to catch Central until Saturday, and now they’ll give the visitors a win against a strong South Carolina State team in pads and helmets.
