On Monday, Oct. 13, Bethune-Cookman University held its first chapter of the Compass Club of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, making its latest press release.
As a pilot club sponsor of the Halifax region, the new Compass Club guides members to begin their journey of “friendship and service”.
B-Cu Freshman Support Specialist Jairus Brown will serve as the club’s school advisor.
16 members were recognized at the charter ceremony: President Sophia Casseus; President-elect Zadaria Shanks; Secretary Joshua Rubens; Treasurer Mila Bostick; Qwesi Allen; Kyona Bailey; Madison Brown; Shakira brown; Tamia Boseman; Soleil Derisma; George fields; Tazhanae Johnson; Sophia Levasseur; Obria Walker; Tye’lor waters; and Micah Williams.
New members have demonstrated their passion for community involvement by participating in the B-Cu Community Food Distribution Program following a launch from the pilot club and are currently planning future activities.
The Halifax Compass Club is a member of Pilot International. Compass clubs are aimed at young adults between the ages of 18 and 26, providing them with the opportunity to become a valued part of their community.
Compass clubs are also “stepping stones” members to full membership at the pilot international level. Learn more at compassclubintl.org.
In another pilot club, the Halifax Field News honored Shirley Pyle for 35 years with the Club’s organization. President Elissa Thomas introduced Pyle at the club’s Founders Day program Tuesday, Oct. 7.
The program “celebrated the 1983 charter of the Halifax Area Pilot Club, plus 104 years of friendship and service to the pilot international since its inception in 1921,” he said.
The pilot club of the Halifax area “seeks to affect positive change in communities”. The club specifically focuses on: “Preparing youth and young adults for service; promoting brain safety and health; and supporting those who care for others.”
