While the judge axed the fat-shaming claims, the other allegations of false imprisonment and sexual harassment remain.
Lizzo spoke out after a judge dismissed the “fat shaming” claims made by her former dancers in a defamation lawsuit.
The lawsuit made headlines when it was filed in 2023 after former dancers accused the body-positive singer of firing them for weight gain, as well as sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment. Now, the judge has ruled that the case will not proceed with all of its original claims because reports Goodness.
The “Good As Hell” singer addressed the update on social media, posting a message on her video while looking into the camera.
“The disgraceful charges against me have been officially dropped by my accusers,” Lizzo wrote in the video. “They admitted it had no merit in court.”
He then revealed his side, which led to the dancers stopping. He emphasized that their weight did not play a role. Instead, the singers allegedly took the Grammy winner’s personal recording to send to former employees.
“There was no evidence that I removed them because they got fat. Because it never happened. Now the truth is finally out,” he continued. “They were fired not for getting fat, but because they took my personal tapes without my consent and sent them to former employees.”
The news initially shocked fans, given Lizzo’s platform supports body diversity. He also mentioned this mission in the update video.
“I have never fired an employee for being overweight. I have only encouraged and supported people with larger bodies and shared my platform with them.”
As the case continued, Lizo became more mum about the legal battle. His team has remained adamant that the allegations are false, having was also introduced appeals.
He added: “This claim has haunted me since the day it was published. Suffering in silence has been devastating, but I have let my attorneys guide me and I am so grateful for this victory.”
The lawyer for the three dancers, Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams and Noel Rodriguez, confirmed that they will not appeal the decision. Attorney Ron Zambrano issued his own statement, urging the singer’s defense to apply the same level of “mental honesty” to the case. Zambrano also noted that the “vast majority” of claims remain in play.
“Of the few lawsuits that Judge Epstein has dismissed, the plaintiffs have taken a measured approach in letting it go. One would hope to see the same level of intellectual honesty and neutral evaluation from the defendants, but so far that has not been the case, and that is disappointing,” Zambrano wrote.
However, Lizzo may still have to appear in court in the near future. The fat-shaming allegations are just part of a lawsuit filed against the 37-year-old, with additional claims of sexual harassment and false imprisonment. Despite this, the singer has confirmed her innocence in this matter, as the case continues.
“I’m still in a legal battle… I’m not solving it. I will fight every claim until the truth is revealed.”
