Ona Judge, a runaway slave who evaded George Washington himself, lived most of her on New Hampshire’s Seacoast after gaining her freedom. Her story isn’t well known, but there are many who are working to keep Judge’s history – and the history of the black community in Portsmouth – alive.While Judge isn’t a household name, in 18th-century Portsmouth, she was infamous. BALTIMORE — A group of entrepreneurs in Baltimore are creating a community they’re calling the Black Wall Street of Baltimore and they’re encouraging others in the area to support.Along 25th Street there are at least three blocks full of Black-owned businesses. Some of the owners said their mission is to create a strong economic community. Many Black-owned independent bookstores experienced a surge in sales this past summer after the George Floyd protests ignited more interest in learning about Black history, white supremacy, and systemic racism. Marcus Books is the oldest Black-owned bookstore in the country, serving its community for 60 years and weathering many changes.
