ABC News(SPARTA, Ga.) — History tells us that the railroad helped put America on the right track, when trains started moving people and goods across the country in the 1800s. They were yesterday’s highways, making it possible to traverse the nation in four days instead of 30.This travel revolution is one of the reasons that it made sense to give railroads, which are still privately owned in most cases, some of the same powers to claim someone else’s land as a power company, an airport or a public school system. It’s also why 72-year-old Blaine Smith, his wife Diane, his brother…
ANN ARBOR, MI — For 82-year-old Shirley Beckley, the term “urban renewal” still conjures up bad memories. It’s what took away her family home — the house at 115 W. The 2021 list was announced in October and includes two Coast sites: _ For decades before…
One day after the presidential election, and in the days following, Black people across the country, reportedly as young as middle schoolers, received text messages addressing them by name and telling them that they would be transported to plantations to work as slaves and “pick cotton.”While the exact language of the messages vary slightly, most appear to tell recipients that they have been “selected“ or “chosen” to perform cotton picking, i.e. work that was historically performed by enslaved people in the American South. Many were told that they would be picked up by a van and then searched.X contentThis content…
