The US Embassy in Nassau has issued a new security alert for American citizens visiting the beach vacation spot in the Bahamas after a series of sexual assaults linked to Jet Ski operators.

Why is it important?
In 2023, more than 7.2 million people visited the Bahamas, a large proportion of these travelers, according to the Ministry of Tourism.
The new warning from the US embassy comes a week after the state department Updated Level 2 Travel Advisor for Bahamas On March 31, criminals “increased in training” due to crime and dangerous conditions.
The advisory called for travelers heading to New Providence and Grand Bahama—home to Nassau and Freeport—where most of the violent crimes are in Nassau.

A new warning from the US Embassy, issued on April 9, noted a number of incidents where US citizens have been harassed by jet ski operators, from public beaches around Nassau and Paradise Island.
According to the embassy, two American women were reported raped in the last month, and three cases were reported in 2024. The crimes are reported to have occurred in areas including Junkanoe Beach, Saunders Beach and Cabbage Beach.
The alleged victim of the culprits settled near New Providence before attacking the islands.
Separately, four Americans have been hospitalized after jet ski accidents since August, two requiring emergency evacuations to the U.S.
Embassy, US government employees are prohibited from renting or using jet skis on New Providence and Paradise Islands.
Last month, the US State Department updated its advisory for the countryhighlighting the increase in violent crime, including armed robbery and sexual assault.
NASSAU’s “Over the Hill” neighborhood noted particular concerns for areas with “experienced gang-related homicides.
Tourists were also warned to never swim alone and to be vigilant at beaches in downtown Nassau, where sexual harassment has been reported.
The March Counselor also reminded travelers of the Bahamas’ strict firearms laws. “Travellers with firearms or ammunition can face jail time, jail time and fines,” he said.
