HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Canadian company that owns the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, Hawaii’s largest newspaper, has been sold as part of a court-supervised restructuring plan.
Carpenter Media Group announced completion Friday of its acquisition of U.S. and Canadian publisher Black Press Media in a stock purchase completed with other partners.
Black Press owned the Star-Advertiser along with other properties, including Hawaii.com.
The company had been in debt restructuring since January.
Carpenter Media already has operations across the US.
The Star-Advertiser is the nation’s sixth-largest daily newspaper by print circulation.
In addition to the sale, officials said that longtime Oahu Publications, Inc. President and Publisher Dennis Francis has been named Carpenter Media senior vice president.
He will continue with his leadership of OPI.
There was no immediate word on how other Star-Advertiser employees would be impacted.
