Although Black Oak Golf Club officially opened for play in 2012, its idea was conceived by founding partner Joe Hays more than 30 years ago. The private, non-equity club in Long Valley is beautifully constructed, keeping natural landscape in mind. In fact, it is the only course in New Jersey to hold the Audubon Silver Signature.
While the course is considered challenging for the skilled player, it is also very playable from the front tees for those new to the game. The Black Oak’s clubhouse is equally as impressive, with a pro shop to meet all your golfing needs, as well as a bustling restaurant with delicious dining and fun happy hours.
Patch caught up with Hays to learn how the young club is constantly improving their course and clubhouse to give members the ultimate private golf club experience, all in a relaxed and picturesque setting.

Patch: What attracted you to the line of work you’re in, and how did you get started?
Hays: Back in 1975, I tried to join Mendham Golf Club and was told there was a five-year waiting list, which led me to believe that the area could use another golf club. By 1993, with my approximately 220-acre farm and several agreements with adjoining properties, I presented a concept to the Washington Twp. mayor and planning board. They agreed that it would be a nice amenity to the community.
After 10 years and many revisions, the golf course was approved. By then, the Highlands Water Protection Act was established and created three years of negotiations with the DEP, finally gaining approval to be grandfathered in. The end result has been that my partners and I have a beautiful golf course and clubhouse called Black Oak Golf Club.
Patch: If you had to sum up your business mission to a stranger in five words, what would those words be?
Hays: Private golf with hometown feel
Patch: What’s the biggest challenge or most difficult moment you’ve faced in your job?
Hays: The biggest challenge was the government regulations throughout the process. They changed through the years and therefore, our plan and development had to change.
Patch: What’s the most satisfying part of your job?
Hays: After such a long process, seeing the members who have supported us since 2003 taking pride in the club as much as I do. As well as the new members’ enthusiasm for the club’s future.
Patch: How would you say your business or organization distinguishes itself from the others?
Hays: Our club wants to put a new spin on the country club atmosphere and create a family-friendly environment with social events, non-golf interactions and a laid-back, all-inclusive environment. We foster novice players by developing their game through the David Glenz Golf Academy, as well.
Patch: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given when it comes to success?
Hays: Be truthful and direct in business.
Patch: Are there any new projects or endeavors you’re working on that you’re extra excited about?
Hays: As a young club we continue to make improvements to the course and clubhouse. Currently, we are constructing an outdoor entertainment area on our patio overlooking the 18 green and revamping our restaurant’s menu.
Improvements and changes on the course are a priority. One of the partners, my son Pete, has been doing golf construction for 25 years and uses his creativity and knowledge to make our course better and better every season.
Patch: Do you have any events coming up in your community?
Hays: Our 2018 season is coming soon and we are hosting a wide variety of outings for local charities.
Patch: How can Patch readers learn more about your work and business?
Hays: Visit our website or follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
