Florida has recently raised some child labor restrictions
Last year, the State passed a law that allowed young people aged 16 and 17 who school at home to work at any time and more than 30 hours during the school weeks with parental permission.
“We warned that this was just the beginning, this was a slippery slope, and here we are again,” he told The Tallahassee Democrat Jackson Oberlink in Florida for all, a justice defense organization. “We are facing another attempt to remove the basic safeguards for the children of Florida, all to quench the corporate interests that seek cheap labor.”
According to the Florida Policy Institute, there are currently more than 80,000 children of 16 and 17 years in Florida. The organization said that the law puts these young workers at risk of being exploited by their businessmen, demanding that they accept hours of early and late work, which is committed to their education.
There have been 209 child labor violations in Florida by 2023, according to the United States Department of Labor Department. This number has tripled in recent years.
Republicans want to replace workers without documentation for child labor
Governor Desantis said that the labor force has been reduced from the Trump Administration’s efforts to eliminate immigrants without documentation working in workplaces with lower salaries.
“Why do we say we have to import foreigners, even illegally importing them, when you know, teens used to work in these tourism centers. University students should be able to do these things,” he said, according to Tallahassee’s Democrat. “Yes, we had people who came out of these rules, but you could also hire other people. And what happens to wait for our young people to work part -time now? I mean, that’s how it used to be when it was growing.”
