Brian Tyree Henry he has entered what he calls one of his hardest roles as an actor in the new Apple TV+ series, Thief dope.
Next to Manny (Wagner Moura), Ray (played by Henry) explores the ups and downs of an unlikely brotherhood rooted in a trauma. The couple is in a world of trouble after a robbery was wrong.
What is the “DOPE thief” about?
According to an official synopsis, “based on the book of the same name of Dennis Tafoya, Thief dope Philly’s friends and criminals follow as agents of the DEA to steal an unknown house in the countryside, only for its small time grift to become a life and life company, as they unintentionally reveal and discover the largest corridor of narcotics on the eastern coast. “”
Henry called his character, Ray, the only one. He said that viewers find Ray in chaos from the beginning, indicating the roller coaster that will be done during the episodes of Thief dope.
“There are a lot of things about Ray,” she said in the shadow of Bravity and performing in a recent interview. “ I like it, I keep him very close to my heart. Most of my characters, yes. But Ray, especially, was very close just because we start the program we see in some bulls ** immediately from the moment we started. He is on the back of a van trying to find out how to steal a house, how to get these things, how to take this money, how to get these drugs, so that you can see someone who is in a mode of survival.
He added: “We do not see him in a job. We do not see him collect anyone from the care of the day. We see that this man is already coming in a way to steal someone. And therefore, it was interesting because he was how, that’s how he presented him.
Exploring the effects of generational trauma
The characters of Henry and Moura are examples of people navigating the world, often unable to escape the generational traumas they have inherited. For example, as someone with Brazilian background, Moura said that when he moved to the West he learned that people quickly could be much less affectionate than him.
“This was something we connected (about) because Brian is also the case,” Moura said, explaining how it is in his nature to always embrace or greet others with a warm embrace. “ And it transcends the screen, well, as when we were doing the scenes. I felt very comfortable. And I think today, it is so great to see the comfortable men with each other, and this also says a lot about the characters we interpret that they are not the stereotype of the Macho hero, of hard action. These boys are not so.They are all the show.
Henry added, “And not only that, do not forget, they were imprisoned since they were 15 years old. There is nothing more intimate than a prison cell. At the end of the day (too).”
Why Henry calls “thief dope” a story that comes from age
In addition, Henry, who also acts as an executive producer Thief dopeHe said that despite the fact that Ray and Manny are older, the program is still an elderly show.
“I was how, regardless of where we find him, he continues to develop. “ How, how it becomes a man in this world when all these different things are put and denied him, and he is told that you cannot be this and that you should not be able to do it, and then it comes to this element, well, this is the means of how I arrive. This is what I will do. And not only that, this friendship, you know, this part that is in the world, all this was very interesting.
“It was very intriguing to me who this man is, because I know, more often, he gets as many different troops like this, and so many different ways that people want to portray -” them, “Henry continued. “And it seemed to me that Peter (Craig) did an incredible job of doing a universe where you really wanted to know more about Ray and finding -rooting for Ray and Manny. Where you want to know what this relationship is. Ray was incredibly vulnerable and this was something that really wanted to show -me and explore -me at the same time.”
Thief dope It is now transmitted to Apple TV+.
