During Friday, lawyers discussed whether the Mendez brothers have been rehabilitated, according to Variety. Habib Balian, who represented the district’s prosecution, said that the brothers have never assumed responsibility for what they did.
“They are the same people who were then,” Balian said in court, according to Variety. “Thirty years ago, they told the same lies as they are today.”
However, Judge Michael Jesic said that the DA’s office did not offer enough reasons to justify the reduction of the request submitted by the previous administration. Jesic emphasized that a change in the administration should not automatically invalidate the outstanding requests.
“There is no new information,” Jesic said. “None of this is really new. They have stuck with their story. It’s about whether they have been rehabilitated.”
