
South Texas UniversityThe debate team celebrated a great achievement. They won the 35th Annual Speech and Debate Tournament of the International Forensics Association in early March. The event was held in Incheon, South Korea.
“Our team has tirelessly worked on honoring their skills as debaters while representing Texas South press release. “This championship reflects the dedication we see daily. It could not be more important of this realization for this group of scholars and for our university. It is a true personification of excellence in the achievement.”
TSU celebrates being champions
The university competed alongside 27 teams in the tournament, which included Vanderbilt University, South Methodist University and Bradley University. Tsu won 21 awards. They came to poetry, dramatic interpretation and dramatic interpretation of the duo, and reached the fourth and fifth of the parliamentary prizes of the speakers of the debate.
“When we competed in this competition in Ireland last year, the result was not what we prepared and motivated us to work harder throughout the year to be ready for this time,” said debate team member Jaila Hampton. “It was rewarding to compete at the level we knew we were capable of. We are excited to return another international championship in the south of Texas.”
It is the fifth victory of the TSU championship and the first since 2018.
The legacy of the TSU debate team founder
“We won the first place in the four tournaments where we had been,” said Batiste-Roberts. “But then to end the championship it was a wonderful and unpleasant experience for students, and for me because I always remind our founder Dr. Thomas F. Freeman, who brought both the debate team as a founder and coach for more than 70 years. It happened in 2020, but his spirit is still alive with us.”
Dr. Thomas F. Freeman set up the debate team in TSU in 1949. He trained it before retiring -SE In 2013 and inspired the movie The great debatersstarring Denzel Washington.
This year’s victory marks the first since Freeman died by 2020 at the age of 100.
“We have maintained the history of the team, who has been winning and producing students who are doing their mark throughout this country,” said Batiste-Roberts, according to according to The Houston Chronicle.
